The Election Commission says that the postal voting in the 2023 local government elections will be postponed indefinitely.
Accordingly, the postal polls scheduled to be held on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th have been subject to this uncertainty.
Arrangements were made to distribute the postal ballot papers tomorrow at 1,116 centers, but the decision was taken due to non-receipt of money related to the printing of postal ballot papers from the government, the Election Commission said.
The Election Commission brought representatives of political parties and informed about this today, and the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Member of Parliament Sagara Kariyawasam, who joined the discussion today, said to the media after the discussion that he will stand for the holding of the election and believes that the issue of ballot paper printing will be resolved.
Meanwhile, United National Party General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that the commission wanted to hold the election and President Ranil could not prevent such a situation from arising in the background of no money.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Nalin Bandara, who came for Sajabaya, said that unfortunately, the government has taken steps to prevent voting by locking up money. They have to seek the help of the courts and take to the streets to get elections for the people.
Member of Parliament Mano Ganesan said that he appreciates the efforts made by the commission to hold the elections so far and condemns the government’s shameless pressure to not hold the elections. Because of this, he decided to go to court for a vote.
