Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage today (8) rejected the former president’s request to return nearly 175 lakh rupees.

It is reported that former President Gotabhaya Rajapakse has demanded part of the 17.5 million rupees found in the presidential residence during a public protest in 2022, and Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage has rejected the request made by his lawyers.

When the former president’s lawyer requested the magistrate to hand over the money found by the anti-government protestors during the public protests in July last year to his client.

Rejecting the request, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage held that it is the responsibility of the court to conduct an investigation regarding the amount before issuing an order.

He further said that investigations are also possible under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Bribery Act, and therefore it cannot be released.
